Call Before You Dig
Planning a home improvement job? Planting a tree? Installing a fence, deck, or mailbox? WAIT!
Whether you’re planning to do it yourself or are hiring a professional, there’s a very important step to take before you start: Call 811 at least 48 hours (excluding weekends and holidays) before digging to avoid interrupted service.

How 811 Works:
Calling 811 from anywhere in the country puts you in touch with the local One Call Center. Provide the call center representative with information on where your job is located, when you plan to perform the work, and what type of work is being performed. That’s it! All affected utility companies will be notified about your upcoming project and will send locators out within two business days to mark the approximate locations of buried utilities FOR FREE.
Colored paint markings or flags within the project area will let you know that buried lines have been marked.
Who Should Call:
The person actually doing the digging must make the call to 811. If you’re a do-it-yourselfer, you make the call. If you hire a contractor, the contractor makes the call. The 811 call representative will give you a line-locate ticket number. This number is very important, be sure to write it down! If utilities are not marked within the 48-hour window, paint markings are washed away before or during the course of your project, or marker flags are moved, you will need to call 811 again. Give the representative the original ticket number and an updated line locate request is generated with all of the project information that was previously provided.
When to Call:
Line locate tickets expire after 10 business days. If your work doesn’t start when planned or will not be completed within two weeks, be sure to call 811 to update your request no later than 8 business days after the original line locate request was submitted.
Why It’s Important to Call:
Digging without calling 811 can disrupt service to an entire neighborhood, harm you or those around you, and potentially result in fines and hefty repair bills. Safety takes everyone working together. Remember to do your part. Always call 811 at least 48 hours before digging. You’ll avoid injury, expense, embarrassment, and the inconvenience of interrupted utility services.
