Employee Profile: Chris WileyPosted October 22, 2015
“Safety is our company’s priority. Safety is my passion. Safety is personal” – a strong message from Chris Wiley from Mobile Gas’ Safety & Technical Training Manager. He has been a champion for safety at Mobile Gas for several years and he makes no qualms about taking the well-being of every employee seriously.
“It is important that we keep our employees, customers and contractors safe in order for the business to run the most effectively and efficiently,” said Wiley. “We cannot be at our full potential if we have employees that are injured and unable to fully perform their job functions. ”
Since becoming responsible for Mobile Gas’ safety program almost three years ago, Wiley has revamped existing safety programs, implemented new ones and added health and wellness to the 24-hour safety culture. He believes healthy employees make happier employees, which makes for better business. This year he added a “personal” safety message to the campaign.
“I want to see everyone get to go home in as good of condition as when they arrived at work,” said Wiley. “My family is the most important thing in my life and I try to do everything that I can to ensure that I get back to them at night as healthy as possible.”
Wiley exemplifies Sempra U.S. Gas & Power’s core value of safety. He has helped keep safety at the forefront of everyone’s minds at all times. As a result of this team effort, Mobile Gas has been recognized for its outstanding safety efforts. Recently, the company received American Gas Association’s Accident Prevention Award for the second consecutive year in which it had a DART rate (Days Away, Restricted or Transfer) below the industry average. The award was based on 2014 statistics. The DART is based on injuries and illnesses that were severe enough to warrant “days away from work, job restrictions or job transfers.”
“There is not a magic wand that exists to create a strong safety culture,” said Wiley. “I just try to encourage everyone to work hard every day at improving their safety efforts as much as possible so that we all go home safe at the end of the day.”
With Wilely’s guidance, Mobile Gas has launched several safety campaigns such as Don’t Text and Drive, Circle of Safety and Safety in Motion. Mobile Gas also conducts Stand Down for Safety Town Hall Meetings where employees temporarily stop their day-to-day duties to focus on a particular safety topic.
